Explore Inc. is looking for a dependable, hands-on Field Labourer to support our pipeline and facility abandonment crews, with opportunities to assist our Survey Crew Chiefs on field assignments.

Our crews work on pipeline discontinuation and abandonment, surface lease decommissioning, and facility dismantling and removal projects. Depending on project needs, you may also support survey crews on oil and gas, construction and other field projects across Alberta and Western Canada.

This role involves physical labour and practical field support under the direction of a Foreman or Survey Crew Chief. Duties will vary by assignment and may include preparing sites, handling tools and materials, assisting with abandonment work, supporting survey activities and completing site cleanup. Previous abandonment or survey experience is an asset, but is not required. A strong work ethic, safe work habits and a willingness to learn are important to us.

Key Responsibilities

Abandonment and General Field Labour

  • Assist the Foreman and crew with pipeline, lease and facility discontinuation, decommissioning and abandonment work.
  • Prepare work areas, load and unload tools and materials, and help with site setup and demobilization.
  • Perform hand digging where authorized, material handling, site cleanup and other physical labour as directed.
  • Assist with approved disconnection, dismantling and removal activities within your training, competency and assigned responsibilities.
  • Support backfilling, grading and site restoration activities, and keep work areas clear and organized.
  • Use hand tools and power tools only as trained and authorized; clean and check tools, equipment and vehicles and report damage or defects.

Survey Crew Support

  • Assist Survey Crew Chiefs with field assignments when required by project schedules.
  • Carry, set up and pack away survey equipment and supplies under the direction of the Crew Chief.
  • Assist with placing stakes, flagging and field markers, and holding survey rods or prisms as instructed.
  • Help collect field notes, measurements and site photographs as directed, and follow instructions to support accurate fieldwork.
  • Handle survey instruments carefully and help keep equipment, batteries and supplies clean, organized and ready for use.

Pipeline and Utility Locating

  • Assist with pipeline and underground utility locates and sweeps when required, including carrying equipment, placing markers and recording information as directed.
  • Training will be provided, with opportunities to complete locating work once trained, assessed as competent and authorized. Previous locating experience is an asset, but is not required.

Safety and Teamwork

  • Participate in tailgate meetings and hazard assessments; follow Explore and client safety requirements and wear the required PPE.
  • Follow site access, ground disturbance and equipment safety instructions. Start work only when directed and required controls are in place.
  • Stay aware of moving equipment, changing ground conditions and other site hazards; stop and ask for direction when a task is unclear or unsafe.
  • Report hazards, incidents, near misses and equipment concerns promptly to the Foreman or Survey Crew Chief.
  • Work cooperatively with crew members, treat clients and landowners respectfully, and complete timesheets and assigned field records accurately.

To Be Considered, You Will Need

  • A dependable work ethic, a positive attitude and a willingness to learn and take direction.
  • Willingness and ability to perform physically demanding outdoor labour and travel for out-of-town assignments.
  • A strong commitment to safe work practices and the ability to recognize hazards and ask for help when needed.
  • Good communication, attention to detail and the ability to work effectively as part of a field crew.
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s licence and an acceptable driver’s abstract.
  • Ability to meet project-specific training and certification requirements.
  • Previous abandonment, construction or survey experience is welcome, but is not required. Training will be provided for assigned duties.

Additional Experience That Would Be an Asset

  • General labour, oilfield, pipeline, construction or facility decommissioning experience.
  • Survey assistant experience or familiarity with survey equipment.
  • Pipeline and underground utility locating.
  • Experience using hand tools and power tools safely.
  • Current ground disturbance, H2S or first aid training relevant to the work.
  • Remote fieldwork and working outdoors in changing weather conditions.

Location & Schedule

This is a field position with travel throughout Alberta and other parts of Western Canada, including northeastern British Columbia. Projects may involve remote locations, industrial sites, extended driving, variable weather and uneven terrain.

Work is primarily outdoors and includes physical labour, walking, standing, bending, digging, and lifting and carrying tools and materials using safe work practices. Schedules vary by project and may include extended shifts, weekends and periods away from home. Assignments between abandonment and survey support depend on project needs. We work with our field staff wherever possible to balance project requirements with their preferred field time and time at home.
